Historical Background: On the borders of the Majella National Park, this small village is surrounded by lush vegetation and lies on a rocky slope jutting out between the Lavino and Lannella streams.Abbateggio is particularly well-known for rock-climbing and for being one of the best departure point to many excursions in the heart of the Majella massif. The vaillage is famous for its tholos too, ancient dry-stone huts, which can be admired in the surroundings, besides rich in many hermitages. Very likely of Samnite origins, Abbateggio was known in the Middle Ages with the name Ab Badigii. As well as many other settlements of the area, the village was a castrum belonging to the Abbey of St. Clemente a Casauria. Successively ruled by several noble dynasties, in the 14th century was property of Margherita d’Austria and then of the noble Farnese family.
