Historical Background: This small town is situated in the Sangro river valley, lying on two hill overlooking the Adriatic sea as well as the Majella mountain. It is told that Atessa was originated by the reunification of two centres, Ate and Tixe, which had been divided in ancient times through a valley where a terrible dragon lived, defeated by St. Leucio. Besides the legendary origins, the first documented mention dates back to the Middle Ages, although the first settlement was already known during Roman Times under the name of Ate Tixe. In the last decade Atessa has lived a great industrial development which has replaced agriculture which was the first activity, especially thank to big companies like the Sevel and Honda.
