Historical Background: On the first southern slopes of the Gran Sasso massif, this small centre is included in the area of the Nature reserve of Voltigno. It has medieval origins and was probably founded by the Franks, as it is written in documents dated 962. During the 12th and 13th century the bishops of Penne had the supremacy over the village. Then on it was the Cantelmo family who ruled and successively yielded Brittoli to the D’afflitto, in 1588.Of the architectonic structure, worth of a mention is the Palazzo Pagliaccia next to the noble Chapel of S. Antonio. Precious are the naturalistic beauties.On the territory of Brittoli are included the nature reserve of Voltigno and Valle d’Angri, established in 1989.Today Brittoli is part of the National park Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga.
