Historical Background: Carpineto has an altitude of about 500 mt above sea level and a population of 700 inhabitants. Close to the National Park Gran Sasso-Laga, the village is situated on a hill overlooking the Nora river. The toponymn of the commune comes probably from the name of a tree, the Carpino (hornbeam) which was present in that area. Quoted for the first time in a document of the 11th century. In 962 was given to the monastery of St. Bartolomeo, founded by the Count of Penne in that year. The following history is bound to the events of the abbey. Just below the built-up area is situated the abbey of St. Bartolomeo in the 12th and 13th century, of Cistercian style in the rectangular apsis and the vertical orientation of the construction.
