Historical Background: The village dominates the small valley of the Treste stream and its inhabitants are mostly involved in agriculture: it is not by chance that this toponym means plough. Carunchio has medieval origins and was a fortification and feud of the Caracciolo. The first references to this village date back to the 12th century. It is very likely that the present site cannot be identified with the former. It was because of defensive measures that the inhabitants chose a higher and better defensive position .
