Historical Background: Castiglione a Casauria is situated in the high Pescara Valley and preserves many interesting artistic beauties, such as the Abbey of St. Clemente a Casauria. It was an abbot who built the village just before the year 1000 a.d. The structure still preserves a built-up area of houses, towers and walls which enclose the historical centre. The first reference dates back to 987 a.d., but the building date is 980, by Adami I, abbot of the Abbey of St. Clemente a Casauria. Since 1354 the village became a feud of the Cantelmo until 1569, when it passed to the D’Affitto.
