Historical Background: The village is placed on a mountain in the surroundings of the Molise region, next to the springs of the Sinello river. Of medieval origins, it derives its name from its founder Marino Caracciolo. Castiglione Messer Marino is well-known for its handicraft and the engraved stone tradition, as it is visible in the beautiful portal decorating the façade of the parish church. In winter the inhabitants of Castiglione perform the moving tradition of the so-called ndorcia: during the afternoon on Christmas Eve, families burn faggots in front of their houses to warm the Holy Child Jesus. First documents of the village are to be dated 13th century. Successively it entered the possessions of the Caracciolo, until the 15th century. Its location on a hill between the Sente stream an the spring area of the Treste and Sinello rivers overlooks the hills and the pastures.
