Historical Background: Situated in the hinterland in the province of Pescara, Catignano has a mainly agricultural economy. Many archaeological excavations in the surroundings of the commune probably date back to a Roman settlement. The most ancient findings belong to the Neolithic, since the ruins of an entire village were discovered. During the Roman Age the centre of the present built-up area began to widen. A feud of several families, it was for along time ruled by the Camponeschi. Situated on the eastern slopes of the Morrone mountain, it preserves some interesting works of art: the church of St. Giovanni Battista with a façade of the late 14th century, made out of local stone in 1759. In its inside an aisle decorated with stucco works. Outside the built-up area the Cappuccini church with a wonderful Romanesque portal. Well-known is the local production of pork sausages.
