Historical Background: One of the four provinces in the region, Chieti has a population of about 60.000 inhabitants and lies on a hill situated at 300 mt above sea level. On the right bank of the Pescara river, it is just at a few kilometres away from the Adriatic sea. It was the ancient powerful town of Theate and successively a siege of the Teatini monks, a religious order founded in 1524 by St.Gaetano of Thien for the salvation of the souls. According to several legends Chieti was founded by the Greeks, indeed it was Ercole himself, who built it in 53 years before the defeat of Troy, about 1250 years b.c.Traditionally based on agriculture (cereals, vineyards, olive groves) the economy of the town has been lately enriched by many industrial activities, besides a fine handicraft tradition of ceramics and artistic lace (pillow and needle lace). The upper part of Chieti and the district of Chieti Scalo make up the town and the plain, together with the other communes of the valley creates an efficient industrial area, with enormous potential able to give the economy of Abruzzo a boost. In the province of Chieti many are the bathing resorts and important fishing-ports, such as Francavilla al Mare, Ortona and Vasto, this latter called Histonium in ancient times, today an important industrial centre , well-known for olive-oil production.
