Historical Background: Città St. Angelo rises on hill next to the river Saline and the town of Pescara. It is a wonderful terrace overlooking the Gran Sasso and the Adriatic sea as well. The landscape is characterized by vineyards and olive grooves.Tourism is an increasing activity, both thanks to the artistic monuments and the excellent hotel accommodation, especially in Marina di Città S. Angelo. The town structure of the historical centre has a medieval planning and the herringbone plan is crossed by the Corso (avenue) with a series of alleys on both sides. The core of the town is partially enclosed in the ruins of the ancient town walls. Today’s Città S. Angelo was the ancient town called Vestini Angelus, as some archaeological finds show.Although the origins date back to the Vestini and Romans, it is thanks to the Longobards that the village was rebuilt and the worship of St. Michele Archangel was introduced. Destroyed in the 11th century by the troops of Frederic II, it was later restored and ruled by several powerful feudatories.
