Historical Background: Colle di mezzo is situated on the slopes of the hill Castellano between two further hills on the right banks of the Sangro river, in a panoramic position overlooking the artificial Sangro lake where is located an important tourist village, “Il soffio”, with a swimming pool, restaurant and disco and a skating-rink. The territory stretches for 11,39 square kilometres. The first historical references may be dated 12th century. Since the 18th century it has been a feud of the D’Avalos of Vasto, until the abolition of feudalism. Worth a visit is the church of St. Giovanni dated 17th century, with a wrought iron cusp.On a rocky spur overlooking the Sangro Valley, the village suffered for the damaging of several of its districts due to an intense landslide activity of the last decades. The most ancient part of the village was quite completely destroyed, but there are some monuments worth a visit. Next to it , recently restored is the castle D’Avalos, today’s cultural centre. Good id the hotel accommodation thanks to numerous nice bungalows.
