Historical Background: The first mentions to Colonnella are very ancient: in its territory were found many traces of the Neolithic age, belonging to the town called “Truentum”, quoted by Plinius the Old, Strabo and Cicero. The references of the Cronicon Farfense dated 936-962 indicate a Curtem de Culunnellae or Curtem S. Maria Culunnellae. A property of the Ducato di Spoleto, successively of the Kingdom of Naples and then of the two Sicilies, through the plebiscite of 1860 it was annexed to the Regno d’Italia. In 1963 the hamlets Martinsicuro and Villa Rosa detached to form a new commune. In a wonderful position next to the Tronto river, Colonnella has a panorama which includes the Appennines, the Gran Sasso, the Majella and the Sibillini mountains. The historical centre is rich in piazzettas and a maze of small streets, and it can be reached through a very elegant and valuable flight of steps. Many are the examples of residential buildings of the 16-17 th century: Palazzo Volpi, Palazzo Marzi, Palazzo Pardi.
