Historical Background: Cupello is situated next to the Sinello river a few kilometres away from the Adriatic sea. For centuries an agricultural centre, since Roman times it was an important rest station on the transhumance track. Its location on the transhumance roads bears witness to pre-Roman settlements. The best development period dates back to the 15th, century when under the powerful rule of the D’Avalos agriculture was improved thanks to the introduction of new workers called “Schiavoni”, slaves who had fleed from their lands to avoid the Turk raids. It reached the free municipality in the 19th century.
