Historical Background: As well as many other centres along the coast, Giulianova is divided into two built-up areas: the former village on a hill at a short distance from the sea; the modern centre is situated next to the sea. It is thanks to this new Marina (sea promenade), that tourism improved and reached its boom, developing an excellent hotel accommodation.Fishing is another important activity thanks to the presence of the port. Giulianova Paese preserves interesting works of art. The first documents date back to the Roman period, when it was called Castrum Novum . During the Middle Ages Giulianova was known as Castel Flaviano, but towards the end of the 15th century it was the Duke Giuliantonio D’Acquaviva who conquered the commune, which had been the setting of several fightings and gave the town its present name. The town overlooks the Adriatic coast and thanks to its beaches is an important seaside resort.
