Historical Background: Lama dei Peligni rises on the south-eastern Majella slopes on the left bank of Aventino river; its territory stretches for 31,33 square kilometres on a mountainous area. The territory is rich in pre-historic and Roman findings of the ancient settlements which followed one another. The first references to the medieval stronghold date back to the 12th century. The poor documentation does not allow to rebuild the in detail the historical events of the village in the centuries. Its history is bound with the villages of Palena, Taranta Peligna and Lettopalena which were important defensive strongholds overlooking the Aventino Valley. In the 15th century it was under the rule of the Caldora and Capua. In the 15th century Lama dei Peligni was under the rule of the D’Aquino, until the abolition of feudal system. Wonderful is the Grotta del Cavallone at an altitude of 1425 above sea level, rich in stalactites and stalagmites. Of fine art the stone fountain of the second half of the 16th century. Thanks to the action of the environmentalists and in particular to the involvement of Massimo Pellegrini, a Wwf natural reserve has been established which has managed to reintroduce the Appenine chamois in this territory; moreover an archeological museum was established after the name of the zoologist Maurizio Locati, dead in recent times.
