Historical Background: In the surrounding of the National Majella Park, Lettomanoppello is situated on a hill overlooking the Lavino river. Since the Roman age, this village was famous for its several quarries, sulphur and bitumen deposits, for sulphureous water and water springs. Stone engraving is still one of the most important handicraft activities, as it is visible in the historical centre where the stone-cutters still decorate stone pieces for the building industry. In a wonderful position, the territory of Lettomanoppello is rich in several naturalistic destinations: Grotta delle Praie, rich in stalactites and stalagmites and Grotta St. Angelo, a rocky worshipping cave at an altitude of 1200 mt, a sanctuary of the Longobards once belonging to the Cassino monks. Here lived Roberto di Salle, a disciple of the holy Celestin V. Particularly alive is the stone handicraft, which preserves the long tradition and the stone-cutters use the white stone of the Majella mountain to create statues, but also architectonic elements such as friezes, frames, rosettes as well as tools for agriculture. An important event is “Giornate della pietra”(Stone festival): many international artists take part in this sort of Sculpture contest, then they leave in this commune the works of art they have created as a gift.
