Historical Background: On a hill of the Tavo valley, this commune looks like a crib for its typical medieval houses. The most important activity of Loreto is based on olive oil production. The name Loreto comes from Lauro and indicates the presence of many laurel bushes during the Roman age. Loreto Aprutino was settled by the Roman themselves, who later destroyed it. The village was shaped all around the castle and the abbey built in the 11th century and lived a magnificent period in the political field, thanks to the establishment of the county by the Norman sovereigns. Its control function became more important during the Swabian and Angevin domination, until the 15th century, when a long series of important noble families followed one another until the abolishment of feudalism: d'Aquino, d'Afflitto, d'Avalos, Caracciolo, Margherita d'Asburgo, Farnese, Alessandro de' Medici. During the Risorgimento Loreto was indeed an important revolutionary center of the so called Carbonari.
