Historical Background: Although it was officially established as commune in 1963, Martinsicuro boasts very ancient origins as was revealed by the archaeological excavations on a hill on the Tronto river, where the ruins of an ancient protohistoric village of the Bronze and Iron age (11th century b.c.) were brought to light. The ancient town was called Trentum-Castrum Trnetinum, according to Plinius the Old it was founded by the ancient Liburno tribes. The old centre after the destruction of the Gothic and Lombard invasions was abandoned at the beginning of the 7th century.Survived in the Middle Ages in the area between the Tronto river and the site where Charles V would build his watchtower ( called Turris ad Trunctum), the settlement was definitively abandoned between the 14th and 15th century. Only at the beginning of the 19th century this centre was repeopled with the first houses and a small church (Madonna dlla Consolazione) on the present via Po.
