Historical Background: A village whose economy is based on agriculture and sheep farming, Montazzoli is well-known for the sulphureous water springs in the surroundings. It has an altitude of 850 mt above sea level and a population of 1200 inhabitants. The first settlement date back to the 11th and 12th century, and developed all around the primitive tower; first mentions of the castle and of its feudatories are written in the Catalogus baronum, a review of all the medieval feudatories of Abruzzo, and among the first owners of Montazzoli there was a Guillelmus, son of Maneri. On a rocky slope between the Altosa and Sinellos streams, with a wonderful panorama from the mouth of the river Sangro to the Gargano, dominated by the ancient castle. In the center worth a visit is the church of St. Antonio, enriched by baroque furniture: outside the built-up area is the ancient sanctuary of the Madonna della Spogna; in the surroundings a sulphureous water spring and the small Lago Negro, peculiar because of the echo that can be heard on one of its bank, as wrote Antonio De Nino “…if you say loud an hendecasyllable, you will hear that entirely three times repeated on the opposite bank.”
