Historical Background: Montebello di Bertona lies not far away from the Gran Sasso - Monti della Laga mountains, and it is situated at an altitude of 615 metres above sea level, with a population of 1200 inhabitants. The commune was peopled since pre-historic times and takes the name from the Bertona mountain, on which rose an imposing castle, whose ruins are still visible. It is included in the Gran Sasso Laga Nationa Park, and its symbol is the Abruzzo Chamois, which returned to live in the natural habitat of its ancestors thanks to the reintroductions of the Ente Parco, in cooperation with environmentalist associations to safeguard the wholeness of the environment as well as flora and fauna. In a wonderful panoramic position overlooking the Tavo Valley and the Adriatic sea, it preserves the shape of the medieval circular-plan village, surrounding the Castello Ducale, today turned into a new elegant residence. Besides the naturalistic attractions and the wonderful landscapes, the church of S. Pietro Apostolo preserves interesting paintings and wooden statues of the church of St. Pietro Apostolo and the archaeological ruins of Campo La piane.
