Historical Background: Montesilvano is the most important town in the province of Pescara, as a matter of fact it can be considered as an extension to north of the capital town of Pescara itself. Montesilvano in made up of two areas: Montesilvano Paese, the old part of the commune situated on the hills; the modern built-up area on the sea promenade. Besides small and medium industries, good trading activities and manufacturing, Montesilvano is devoted in particular to Summer tourism. Very good are the hotel accommodation facilities. Montesilvano (which means woody hill, from the Latin silva) has a relatively young history: first documents date back to the Middle Ages, when it was above all a fishing centre. It is in the last decades that industry and tourism have developed, thanks to its good geographic position. The two areas of the town are called Montesilvano Marina and Montesilvano Colle. This latter, a panoramic terrace overlooking the Adriatic sea still preserves some elements of the fortified stronghold and interesting churches such as St. Michele Arcangelo (12th – 13th century), divided in three aisles, a stone portal and rectangular apsis, St. Maria del Carmine with the convent (14th century) and outside the built-up area the church of the Madonna della neve (14th century) with valuable frescoes.
