Historical Background: Ortona lies on a hill overlooking the sea. It is surrounded by vineyards but besides agriculture also trading is an important activity in particular shipping business thanks to the presence of the port.The town centre is crowded by tourists, attracted by the well-equipped beaches and by the interesting artistic monuments. To quote some examples the Aragonese Castle and Palazzo Farnese, besides many churches such as the cathedral and the beauty of the historical centre.The commune has very ancient origins and flourished under the rule of the Frentani tribes who had founded the port. Well-known to the Romans Ortona had a decay period during the middle Ages, while a new renaissance was brought about by the Schwabians. During World War II it was theatre of several battles and heavily bombed.
