Historical Background: Penne is one of the most important centre of the province of Pescara, point of reference of the so-called Vestina area. This commune has preserved its medieval structures and lies on a hill between the Tavo and Fino valleys. The small town is based on trade and handicraft activities, although in the last decades the industry field has improved too, in particular in textiles. The ancient name Pinna Verstinorum bear witness to the ancient origins of the town, as a matter of fact Pinna meant a rocky rise. In Roman times Penne was a well-known as thermae resort. Penne had a magnificence period during the Middle Ages. During the Risorgimento the rebellions of the so-called Carbonari took place in this town. In a panoramic position on two hills over the Fino and Tavo valleys, its territory includes the nature reserve of the Lake of Penne, a Wwf oasis worth a visit. The reserve is made up of an environment education centre, a nature-track on an itinerary surrounded by several capanni (huts) for flora and bird-watching, a handicraft workshop, a botanical garden, a museum, two aquariums, a centre for otter-breeding and it is a destination for school and naturalist tourism. It is well-known as the “brick town”, for its buildings quite entirely in fired-bricks, used for the cobbled and narrow streets of the old buit-up area, which preserves several ruins of the ancient 14 th-century town-walls.
