Historical Background: Pescara was founded in 1927, thanks to the union of two small centres: Pescara belonging to the province of Chieti and Castellammare, which was included in the province of Teramo; besides the town a new province was established too, on behalf of the former minister Giacomo Acerbo. Today with more than 120.000 inhabitants, Pescara is the biggest metropolitan area of Abruzzo. Other historical thesis support the hypothesis that Pescara has remote origins, since in the hamlet of Fonatanelle finds of a village belonging to the first farmers of the Stone Age were brought to light, dating back over 6000 years ago. The city of Pescara is the heart of the region, an important trading centre which can boast a canal port at the mouth of the homonymous river, besides having several industries in the alimentary, mechanical, chemical, textile, building and leather fields. Pescara is projected into the future: the facilities of the “Liberi”airport of Abruzzo, the modern tourist port, one of the best in Italy for its dimension and modernity, and last but not least the new railway station, a work of art of modern architecture, among the best examples in Europe.
