Historical Background: Pescasseroli lies in the high Sangro Valley and is famous because is the seat of the National Park of Abruzzo. For sure tourism is the first activity and boasts a good hotel accommodation and facilities. Tourists keen on Nature must come and vistit this place, with its typical animals of the Park such as bears, wolves and chamois. The long handicraft tradition is worth a mention too.This centre was founded by the Italic Peligni tribes and was called Pesculum Seroli; in the built-up area which preserves the ancient structure is situated the Sipari palace, birthplace of the Italian philosopher Benedetto Croce; the most important monument is the church of St. Pietro and Paolo of medieval foundation, with baroque furniture and a wooden Madonna Incoronata statue. The sanctuary of the Tranquillo Mount is an interesting one, where a picture coming from Foggia is preserved, dating back to the 12th century, during the iconoclast persecution. Wood carving is a rooted handicraft activity and produces several artistic works of art.
