Historical Background: On the borders of the National Park of Gran Sasso, this small village is situated on a hill of the high Val Pescara. It is well-known because it is the birthplace of the Beato Nunzio Suplizio.The commune was founded during the Middle Ages, although a Vestine settlement had been established in this area. A gravestone brought to light in the last century bear witness to the existence on this area of a Vestini pagus (village); megalithic wall are located in the hamlet lago del Morrone, actually ruins of a sanctuary dating back to the 4th century b.c.During the 12th century it was quoted with the name of Pesculum among the castles of the Terra Sansonesca , properties of a Sansone, who was an important feudatory in 981. After the damaging of the earthquakes of 1917 and 1933, and many landslides, the inhabitants left the old centre and built a new area downhill.
