Historical Background: A big centre of the Pescara hinterland, Pianella is situated on the hills between the rivers Pescara and Tavo. Pianella is an agricultural centre particularly famous for its olive oil production. It was inhabited by the Italic Vestini tribes, and during the 16th century it was bought by Margherita D’Austria, who ruled it until the end of feudalism. Many archaeological findings of Prehistory were brought to light In several limestone and silicious caves in the surroundings; during the quaternary there were most likely hundreds of palafittes along the Nora and Tavo river valleys, and still it is possible to find stone splinters and flint items. Before the Romans, the village was settled by Greeks, Carthaginians, Etruscans. Probably Annibal arrived in this village and according to the tradition, he ordered his troop to stole some wine, that was used to heal the horses’ hoofs, covered with sores. During the Middle Ages it was called Plenilia and was destroyed several times. After variousfeudatories, it belonged to Margherita D’Austria and was included in the so-called Stati Farnesiani.
