Historical Background: A village in the high Pescara valley, on a rocky spur. The commune was given by the king of Naples to the town of Chieti; it has a wonderful panoramic position. The most ancient part of the village preserves the structure of the former medieval building. The parish church is devoted to St Michele and Giusta and lies on a former Romanesque church, to which valuable decorated paintings on canvas belong, recently restored, on exhibition in the left aisle. The 19th century church of St. Rocco was built with materials coming from the ancient church, while the Neoclassic façade was entirely in white Majella stone and was created by the local stone engravers.Valuable works of art are kept in the oratory of St. Maria of the cross( 17th century), just at a few distance from the built up area (in the hamlet Tre Croci), in a place where according to the legend the Holy Virgin appeared to a young shepherd; the convent preserves fine decorations and valuable frescoes, with the representation of the Passion scenes, by the painter Tommaso Di Berardino from L’Aquila. The Madonna della Croce is worshipped, bound to miracles which saved the inhabitants of the village against the brigands, scared by a burning fire. At the sunset of 2nd May every year, the event is recalled with an enchanting night procession, where the Madonna statue is carried through the streets of the village, during amazing fireworks.
