Historical Background: Pizzoferrato lies on a rocky slope overlooking the left side of the Sangro river valley. Its territory stretches along 30,85 square kilometres, in a area rich in woods and pastures. The village was founded in the Middle Ages, becoming soon a mighty mountain community because of its unbeatable position. There are only a few historical documents: some ruins of the fortified stronghold and the church of St. Nicola and Madonna del Girone, visible on the big cliff over the village date back to the 10th century. Pizzoferrato was successively a feud of several noble families, the last were the Monaco. A modern tourist centre is situated in the Sole valley, in the upper area of the village.
