Historical Background: Popoli lies in a strategic position in the Tre Monti gorges, separating the Peligna from the Pescara valley. Several are the nature reserves of the surroundings. The village is an agricultural centre (excellent wine production), although also small industry is developing. Spa resorts have been established in recent times. This is the point, where the water springs from the connection of the Sagittario and Aterno originate the river Pescara,. A fisrt mention dates back to the Middle Ages, when it is referred to as Castrum Properi. It was thanks to the Cantelmo family, that Popoli grew in richness and several monumental and religious structure were built. Perched on a rocky slope, the village is dominated by the ruins of the medieval castle: in the historical centre there are several important architectonic monuments, that have preserved their original characteristics: on the via Giordano Bruno it is possible to admire the ancient of craftsmen ’s workshop signs.
