Historical Background: Roccamorice is part of the Majella National Park and lies on a hill overlooking the Lavino river. It is well-known because of its numerous hermitages, a beloved destination for those who love rock climbing. The origins of the village are very ancient, probably they date back to the Middle Ages. Among the most enchanting hermitages of the region: St. Spirito a Majella, recently restored, a wonderful architecture example, perfectly set in the natural environment. Pope Celestino V found here one of its favourite shelters and also Cola di Rienzo and the writer Torquato Tasso lived here, this latter after his escape from the convent of St. Francesco in Ferrara, looking for peace and a new contact with wild nature: he particularly loved staying at a fountain next to a cave, later called the cave of Tasso’s water. Along the way leading to the hermitage, wonderful limestone rocks create one of the best European site for climbing, a pleasure all over the year for those keen on free climbing.
