Historical Background: Next to the coast, the commune lies on a rocky slopes with a wonderful panorama, both over the sea and mountains. For a long time the village was under the influence of the powerful abbey of St. Giovanni in Venere. Rocca San Giovanni was founded in the 11th century by Oderisio I and then enlarged by Oderisio II, both abbots of St. Giovanni in Venere, as a fortified shelter for the monkeys of the abbey.
