Historical Background: Sant’Egidio alla Vibrata stands on the extreme north bound of Vibrata Valley and it is at 239 metres above sea level. As Plinio reports the Llium hamlet, which rose in the present Sant’Egidio area, was well-known to the Roman for its artisans and decorators that were very able in the working of “purpora”, that is cloths dyed purple red. Up till now Sant’Egidio is famous to be in forefront of industry and trade (textile industry, sugar almond, etc.). The origin of the village goes back to the construction of Sant’Egidio convent, a Benedectine colonization building which supported the formation of the first residential complex; then the village developed, and until the Unity of Italy it was the centre of customs and military places of the Napolitan-papal border. Among the typical products there is the chamomile, coming from the next “Montagna dei Fiori”.
