Historical Background: Villa Celiera is a very characteristic commune situated not far from the Voltigno plane. The village is 700 metres above sea level and has a population of about 1000 inhabitants. The history of the commune is very ancient and it is related to the history of Saint Marie from Casanova abbey, built in 1191 by the Countess Margaret from Loreto and Conversano. The first mention of Villa Celiera goes back to the 13th century, known as Cilera, Celeria, Cellari. The Saint Marie from Casanova abbey was entrusted to the Cistercian; for 7 centuries was one of the most important abbey of Abruzzo and also accommodated 500 monks, devoted to agricultural, to study and arts. The abbey was suppressed under the Reign of Giuseppe Bonaparte.
