Historical Background: Villalago, clung on a rocky spur, is situated on the banks of the Scanno lake, in the wonderful and wild setting of the Sagittario Valley. The origins of the village go back to the Middle Ages. Inside the Gorge of Sagittario river, among Turkey oak and beech woods, the landscape was described as “terrifying and wonderful” by English travellers like Craven and Lear. The particular position of Villalago, between Scanno lake upriver and artificial lake downhill, supports a particularly healthy microclimate; the country also offers an active tourism, with excursions, canyoning and climbing. The built-up area is characterized for the flight of steps, the lanes, small square and preserves ruins of fortified hamlet and of tower. The parish church of St. Maria from Loreto preserves a wonderful painting of the 16th century and an interesting stony medieval altar.
