Historical Background: Situated on a hill-slope just a few kilometers away from the sea, between the rivers Piomba and Vomano, Atri is one of the most important historical and artistic centres of Abruzzo. Tourism in the most important activity, thanks to the numerous monuments of great interest the town still preserves.Concerning the landscape, the calanchi are a very original geological formation of the clay-rich territory. Atri has very ancient origins, since its story is rooted in the 10th b.c. century, when the Illyrs migrated on the Italian Adriatic coasts.Firstly with the name Hadranus, then Hatria this town was very important since Roman times , above all because of its strategic position. In the middle Ages Atri was a Free Municipality, while in the 14th century it was sold to the Dukes of Acquaviva, who promoted a true Renaissance of the town.As a matter of fact it was the Acquaviva family, who built many monuments and Palaces still preserved today. Many members of this noble dynasty became cardinals and prelates.
