Historical Background: A charming medieval village, Castel del Monte is included in the districts of the Gran Sasso- Monti della Laga National Park, a beloved destination for nature excursionists.For many centuries it has been an important centre of the transhumance and today it is still well-known for its delicious cheeses. In the 16th century Castel del Monte was destroyed by the troops of the L’Aquila army led by Muzio Colonna. In the heart of the Gran Sasso park, the village rises on a hill dominated by the watchtower of the castle. The most ancient district called Riscetto still preserves the ruins of the town walls. Wort a visit is the church of the Madonna del Suffragio, with a Madonna wearing the typical dress of the village. In the sacristy a silver cross of the goldsmith’ school of Sulmona of the 15th century. The church of St. Marco Evangelist preserves the Renaissance and Baroque altars with some statute dated 1508. The village lied on the transhumance roads and today it is possible to visit the wool museum, a witness to the importance of sheep farming. Recently a museum net has been created in the whole historical centre. Warehouses, abandoned houses have become exposition centres for the Material culture.
