It is made up of several outlying divisions and hamlets. Recent archaeological findings support the hypothesis that the first settlement already existed during the prehistoric age and indicate that the of the first site was located in the area of today’s centre. The first written references appeared in documents of the 10t th century. A feud of the D’Acquaviva family together with Castellbasso, it separated from this latter in 1529. Castellalto, made up of several divisions has its centre in Castelbasso, rich in several artistic treasures: surrounded by the ancient walls, it preserves the church of St. Pietro and Andrea with a portal dated 1338. In July and August takes place the cultural events “Castellarte”. In Castellalto worth a visit is the church of St. Giovanni the Evangelist, with a portal dated 1584 and paintings of the 17 th century, and the church of Madonna degli Angeli with a baroque altar and paintings of the 18th century.
