Historical Background: Clung on the rocky slopes, Castelli is famous all over the world because of its valuable tradition in ceramics. Thanks to this activity it is likely that this village was already well-known during the pre-Roman age. One of the several historical theories support that the Etruarians introduced the ceramics art in this territory. A very good departure point for climbs and excursions on the Gran Sasso massif, during summer holidays it is characterized by fairs and events bound to local handicraft, pottery production and history. Castelli owes its importance to painted and glazed ceramics, which still today represents the main handicraft activity. It was particularly during the 16th and 17th centuries that artistic ceramics were produced. The forerunner of this handicraft tradition was Orazio Pompei, whose dynasty decorated a wonderful rural church with majolica bricks. In the 17th century the Grue family was the best representative of the ceramics tradition, as well as the valuable works of the families Gentile and Cappelletti. Still today this tradition is alive and it is possible to visit the numerous workshops in each and every corner of the village.
