Historical Background: Gabriele D’Annunzio called it the Terrace of Abruzzo and not by chance, since Guardiagrele, situated on the eastern Majella slopes has a wonderful view over the Adriatic sea. In this small town was born the sculptor Nicola da Guardiagrele and the town can be defined the capital of Abruzzo’s handicraft (wrought iron and copper) and in particular of goldsmith’s art.Still today rich in many medieval elements, Guardiagrele reached its highest importance during the 12th century, when a first small defensive town called Greelem was found in this territory.The first who had settled this area were the Benedectine monks and built a monastery. D’Annunzio, the so-called Vate writer quoted Guardiagrele in its famous novel Il Trionfo della Morte.
