Historical Background: On the Velino mountain slopes, this small village is well-known for the presence of the near Alba Fucens. When the town of Alba Fucens was abandoned by the Romans, Massa d’Albe was founded although the first certain documents date back to the 15th century. It stretches at the foot of the Difensola mountain. In the surroundings of the village it is possible to visit the archaeological ruins of Alba Fucens, with mighty defensive walls in polygonal stones, dating back to the 3rd century b.c. The Roman town has given back quite all the ruins of the town-planning with the basilica, foro, building for entertainment. On the hill of St. Pietro there is the St. Pietro Church of the 12th century, restored in the following centuries.
