Historical Background: A small village in the Majella district, a very good departure point for excursions in the undiscovered nature of this area. About a century ago, this village was only a hamlet of the town of Caramanico. Worth a visit is the fort of Roccacaramanico, completely abandoned, in a scenery of unique beauty. A few years ago, only an old woman kept living all alone in this hamlet, so thanks to its stubbornness and became the symbol of these mountains. Every morning she opened the door of the church and tolled the bells of the tower. Characterized by steep and rocky landscapes, alternated with beech woods and pastures, it hosts deers, bears, eagles, foxes and beech-marten. Recently established is a big botanical garden , a natural amphitheatre with a scenery overlooking the Majella and Morrone mountains, unique in Italy, including the whole Appennine wildlife. The present centre comes from the reunification of two districts, Villa Ricciardi and Villa Sant’Eufemia; this latte is the most ancient, with a typical simple and linear diagonal layout of the houses, made out of stones used for the flooring of streets too. The most important architectonical building is the parish church of St. Bartolomeo Apostolo, with the façade and the inside stone decorations, and a wooden tabernacle.
