Historical Background: Situated on a hill at about 14 kilometres from the motorway exit, the historical centre of Sant’Omero, that goes back to the 12th century, probably comes from to a Norman military building. In 1823, nearby the Vallorino an important Roman milestone area was discovered, now not available, of consul Lucio Cecilio Metello. In the built-up area there is the baroque church of Saint Anthony abbot; in the surroundingd, the Saint Maria a Vico church (end of 10th century), immersed to the green of the countryside, is the most complete church among the region monuments before the XI century. According to the recent searches, the Saint Maria a Vico church rises upon a temple consecrated to Hercules. The plan of this church is that typical of the basilica, the inside with a nave and two side aisles, shows squat pillars and rudimentary capitals, and preserves a Roman inscription pertinent to a temple of Hercules. Particularly important in architecture is the medieval palace De Mendoza. In the neighbouring rise the typical “pinciaie”, that is earth and straw houses.
