Historical Background: Situated on the first slope of the Gran Sasso mountains, at about 410 metres above sea level, the village is made up of 1.500 inhabitants and its economy is mainly directed to agriculture. Its ancient origin goes back to the early Middle Ages, and it is one of the most ancient settlement of Abruzzo’s hinterland. In the National Park of Gran Sasso and Laga mountains, in the centre of Siciliana valley, the street that conduct to St. Gabriel’ sanctuary is nowadays attended by pilgrims; in this place there are naturalistic, religious, historic and artistic paths, and also an horse centre that includes tennis and pic-nic areas. The historical centre of the village, created by the renovation of the d building of the Middle Ages, is characterized by the buildings of 18th century. Numerous are the architectonical elements that come back to the 15th and 16th century: the marquis Palace, the ruins of the castle and the medieval houses, but particularly some churches. The most important churches are the St. Antonio’s one, with a wonderful Gothic-Renaissance portal, adorned with refined sculpture that have the date, 1471, and the name of author, Andreas Lombardus; this name testify that in Abruzzo worked many Lombard artists between the 11th and 15th century, that transferred their tecnique to local artists.
