Historical Background: Vasto is one of the most important seaside resort in the province of Chieti, situated on a hill sloping down to the sea. Marked by a commercial vocation since its early times, especially thanks to the presence of a port, this small town is very important also for its interesting artistic monuments. Tourism is a leading activity and visitors can enjoy wonderful beaches too. Thanks bathing tourism the modern part of the town bulilt on the sea promende, the so-called “Marina di Vasto” has expanded and developed excellent accommodation facilities. The origins of Vasto date back to the age of the ancient Italic peoples, when it was an important settlement of the Frentani, before being conquered by the Romans. Its ancient name was Histonium. In the Middle Ages there was a decay period, then a cultural and economic recovery was brought by the Longobards, who called the town Guasto.
